Dramatic images of refugees smuggling, ivory poaching and floods feature in the shortlist for the sixth global award for photography and sustainability.
Michael Oryem, 29, a recently defected Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) fighter whose group was involved in ivory poaching in Garamba national park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Oryem holds two of six tusks that he hid and then led Ugandan forces to. He claims that the LRA killed many elephants in the park and that he was ordered by Joseph Kony, LRA’s leader, to bring the ivory to him in Darfur, South Sudan.
