Gruyaert studied at the School for Photo and Cinema in Brussels, before becoming director of photography for a TV channel alongside freelance advertising and fashion work

His father worked at a factory that made photographic film and paper. ‘
I was born into it,’ Harrry Gruyaert has said, ‘but I had to fight with my father to become a photographer, because he was extremely Catholic.
He didn’t think it was serious.
He knew some photographers. He thought they were not faithful to their wives’.
